Cyberspace & Bushido...
I'm wondering if it's still worth buying...
Published on November 11, 2007 By cavalierex In Strategy
Hi, everyone.

I remember when Civilization IV came out in 2005, it was hailed as one of the best strategy games of all times.

I didn't buy it, or even play it, back then. But recently, I saw the release of an expansion pack called "Beyond the Sword," which got great reviews and looks very cool.

So, I was wondering what you guys think of Civilization IV now, a little over 2 years after its release. Is it still worth getting? Specifically,

* Do you still play Civilization IV?
* What did you think of the "Warlords" expansion pack?
* What do you think of the "Beyond the Sword" expansion pack?
* Is a new version of Civilization about to be released that I should just wait for?
* What other strategy games do you think are better than Civilization?

Please keep in mind that I'm a novice at these computer strategy games. I do like board games like Stratego and Risk, and in the (way distant) past, I enjoyed games like Caesar II and SimCity.

Thanks a bunch.

MoO2 > Civ.

That said, MoO2 > Anything, really.

Sorry but, Alpha Centauri >> MoO 2 and Civ combined

Anyways, the only real thing Civ 4 has going for is its modability. Fall for Heaven is absolutely fantastic. 'Shadow' (the next phase, HUGE release) is due out December 18th I think.

By the way, don't waste your money on Warlords; more like a glorified patch than an actual expansion. BTS was pretty decent though.

Master of Orion 2 is by far the best space TBS game made to date. I have not played GC2 yet. I"m downloading it right now. MoO2 if you never played it you are missing out on a great game. Not sure where you could come by a copy these days though... bet it would run like $5-$10. This game does not have the graphics of the games today, but the gameplay is second to none.

Hellz no, the AI just annoys the heck out of me.

1 - Occasionally, but not as often as GalCiv2 these days (in the past that was different).
2 - Good, but buy Beyond the Sword instead as it has nearly everything from Warlords
3 - Very Good, it has a few bugs that Firaxis is working on, but a definite buy
4 - No. There is a console-based version coming out, but I don't think that is what you're asking for.
5 - Civilization is the king of the Genre. GalCiv2, Age of Wonders series, the Warlords series, the early Master of Orion Series, Master of Magic were all good in their time.

Civilisation is a good game. But it has a CD copy protection and so I cannot play it, when I travel. That is whay I don't play it, but I will gladly return to it, if I have time.

Civilization is the best TBS i have ever played. The last expansion pack adds lot of new features and IMO is a must buy if you like civilization4.

If CIV4 after 2 years remains a good game? There are no others TBS games released(not considering wargames)that are remotely as good as GC2 and CIV4, I wouldn't certainly miss this game considering you can find it also at a cheap cost.

For what i've read and heard it excellent. I remember Civ2 which was one of the best games ever, SMAC even better. Civ3 did not feel good for some reason.
I'd play it if i had it, i'd buy it right away if i knew wether it works with Radeon9200 (old, yes, gotta buy new comp anyway so i'm not upgrading).
I have games that don't support 9200 but work anyway. Usually older ones.

I suggest you to download a demoversion. If it works - fine. Buy it. If not, save your money.

best strategy games ever:

1) Master of Orion 2

2) Civilization Call to Power 2

still all way best compared to civ4 + both expansion and galciv2 + exp.
i would like to see a civ ctp3.

in galciv2, i hate not to have borders and not to be able to control my own space...

I don't play Civ IV anymore. It was fun while it lasted and I played it against a friend. But we gave up because it took too much time. I also figured out how to get Caesar ranking so after that not much left to play. In general Civ IV is fun, but the end game is too much micromanaging, although other games have this problem toward the end as well.

I have a personal affinity for Master of Magic, but MOO2 is the most addictive game I've played. I actually had to sell it to stop myself from playing it.

MOO2 was really very addictive. It was the only game (except the first Civilization) I played more than 5 times to the end. I loved designing a new ships. Some people like Alpha Centauri, but I did not. I was very missing similar game until GC2.

Hell yes Civ 4 is awsum. Warlords has some great built in mods like the chinese unification and alexander vs persia.

Love that game, so much fun...

If your a GalCiv2 fan and want to play on tera firma go for it, gold edition comes with Warlords and its only 30 bucks for basicly infinte play. Lot of fun

Download the .exe crack. Takes like 30 seconds.

I just downloaded the Fall from Heaven mod for free off the website below a few weeks ago, and have been playing it furiously ever since then. Great mod, and the best bit of free content I've seen for any game in a LONG time.

In a class w/Dwarf Fortress, but with a better UI!!

Seriously, if you enjoyed Civ IV much at all, check out the download (either for BTS or the original, vanilla Civ IV) at:

I bought Civilisation IV (Mac) two yers ago. I tried it once. Turns out it runs only in fullscreen mode (can't have that with strategy games, as I like to watch a DVD or so while playing them) and requires its DVD.

I tried to make an image of the DVD but the game didn't work with it.

I do not want to get up and get the DVD every time I want to play a few moves.

So I put the box away, cursed the maker (of the game), and never looked back.

(The crack is incompatible with later updates and I don't think I should have to find a crack on the Web just to play a game I bought.)

Any ideas for similar (map-based and turn-based) strategy games?

Windows is fine too.
