Cyberspace & Bushido...
I'm wondering if it's still worth buying...

Hi, everyone.

I remember when Civilization IV came out in 2005, it was hailed as one of the best strategy games of all times.

I didn't buy it, or even play it, back then. But recently, I saw the release of an expansion pack called "Beyond the Sword," which got great reviews and looks very cool.

So, I was wondering what you guys think of Civilization IV now, a little over 2 years after its release. Is it still worth getting? Specifically,

* Do you still play Civilization IV?
* What did you think of the "Warlords" expansion pack?
* What do you think of the "Beyond the Sword" expansion pack?
* Is a new version of Civilization about to be released that I should just wait for?
* What other strategy games do you think are better than Civilization?

Please keep in mind that I'm a novice at these computer strategy games. I do like board games like Stratego and Risk, and in the (way distant) past, I enjoyed games like Caesar II and SimCity.

Thanks a bunch.

I work in window mode for my programs all the time but I can't play a game in window mode. Don't you find this distracting?

It's no GalCiv2, but Civ4 is great. If the genre intrests you in the least, get it. Also get the Beyond the Sword expansion, but skip Warlords. The Beyond the Sword expansion includes everything Warlords does, except for a couple of scenarios.

I don't want to advocate piracy openly on a official board, but there's no way in hell I'd ever pay full expansion price for those scenarios.

CivIV has one thing going for it that makes it my game of choice many a time. I mentioned this in another thread recently. The PitBoss. Run PitBoss.exe to check it out. Can run a low maintenance dedicated turn server for Play-By-Email games Ideal for PBEM goodness.

I remember having to download the PitBoss separately for vanilla CivIV, because they came out w/it after the initial release, so if all you have is vanilla civIV you might have to download it. But it comes w/beyond the sword at least, ready to go out of the box, so anyone w/the expansions (I don't have warlords) probably already has it, even if they don't know about it, just look for the file in the main game directory.

Can probably google some nice explanations/instructions on how to use it. Most don't even seem to be aware of it, yet its probably my favourite feature of CivIV, and why CivIV is still installed on my machine.
